Night Sights for M1A...
...can't seem to find both front and back. I'm looking for a 3-dot system.
I guess I only need the aperture on he back, as opposed to the whole unit. Decided to go this route instead of scope. Appreciate any thoughts and help in locating. |

The term 'night' sights on a rifle is a misnomer - more like low level light sights which don't work all that well even under low light. Using 'night' sights on a rifle breaks at least two of the rules of gun safety - be sure what you're shooting and know what's downrange. For night time use (short of having NVD compatible with a rifle sighting system) a good shotgun is tough to beat. |

http://www.xssights.com/store/tactical.html There are some limited applications to having night sights on a rifle. The key word being "limited". I am a NV kind of guy myself. Bx3 |

Thanks I am me, I am free
Yeah, not really wanting night vision right now (well I want NV, I just can't afford it right now). I'm actually just looking for quicker target acquisition through that small aperture...daytime, shadows and low light. I called 'em "night sights" because that's how I've seen them described/listed in some of the online resources. Just can't find them for the M1A |
Re: Night Sights for M1A...
Bx3,
Yeah I'd found those, but what about the back sight? I've been told the back aperture is available to give me a 3-pt system ...but where? |
Re: Night Sights for M1A...
Have not seen them for the rear aperture. The front is the critical component if nothing else.

Re: Night Sights for M1A...
Forget about them. I have an XS Systems Tritium front site and it's absolutely worthless. The problem is; if it is dark enough to see the luminous sight, it is too dark to see the target, as the glowing front site kills your night vision. At dusk, (low light), the site isn't glowing enough to use it anyway.
This is on a SOCOM with the insanely large rear aperture. It would be even worse with a standard ap, or Heaven forbid a NM. To see better in low light, you might try drilling out an aperture to a larger size. Aps are cheap (5-10 bucks), so you really can't mess much up. The larger ap will make target aquisition much faster, and allow you to have a larger feild of view around the target, but it will make pinpoint accuracy more difficult. |
Re: Night Sights for M1A...
All good points. There is a trade off for everything. The tritium wont actually kill your night vision as the green falls under a certain wavelength but I could certainly see it temporarily washing out your target. On a side note, the bladed sight would be a bit better for distance than the large circular post. Bx3

Re: Night Sights for M1A...
I'd suggest a flashlight if it works for your application. Standard sights show up real well against a target illuminated by a Surefire or equivilant.
The M14 does not lend itself to easy light mounting, but it can be done. |
